cockpit motd doesn't display
Hello Everyone, On my AlmaLinux 9 installs, the cockpit motd I'm used to seeing upon login via ssh isn't being shown. I've looked at the symlinks that get created when the unit is enabled and everything appears to be fine, yet no motd noting that cockpit is available. I get the inactive message just fine. As soon as it's activated, the inactive message dissapears and doesn't get replaced with the active one. Has anyone else encountered this? -- Ranbir

I ended up figuring out that the active cockpit motd is only displayed to the root user. A reguler user login over ssh doesn't see the message. What I don't know is if that's intentional and so a change in the way it works, or if there's a misconfiguration or possibly a bug. I'll look through the docs to see if it's mentioned in there. BTW, I'm not going to lie, but I miss the old CentOS users' mail list. AlmaLinux's forums are no where near as convenient as the old email list for CentOS was. :/ I would vote for turning those forums off and making everyone go back to email, but I know many people won't like that. :: sigh :: -- Ranbir
Doesn't it work as simple email list?

It does? Hmm...I'll have to check. But, it'll still be different user "lists" to join, per se. I don't mind web forums. I just find that mail lists are a better catch all and much easier to archive locally. -- Ranbir

Resending it to the list via email versus directly to Ranbir. What is the 'active cockpit motd'? I am guessing you are meaning something like: $ ssh root@xenadu Activate the web console with: systemctl enable --now cockpit.socket ``` Last login: Fri Jul 22 18:12:38 2022 from 192.168.1.140 [root@xenadu ~]# logout Connection to xenadu closed. [ssmoogen@ssmoogen-rh ~]$ ssh xenadu Activate the web console with: systemctl enable --now cockpit.socket Last login: Tue Jul 26 13:32:47 2022 from 192.168.1.10 [ssmoogen@xenadu ~]$ ``` I get that message no matter which user I log in as on an Alma 9 system. Going from a reply ranbir gave me, turning it on does stop sending the message to normal users. Looking at my Fedora systems, this looks like it is an upstream cockpit change versus an Alma one. -- Stephen J Smoogen.
