Try launching firefox from the command line and see if any interesting errors show up. When launching things via GUI stderr and stdout either go to some obscure log or into the null device. Check your syslog (messages) too. 8gb isn't a lot of RAM these days; the syslog will show if the OOM killer is coming into play.
