VirtualBox kernel modules fail to build

I'm trying to update my VirtualBox installation to VirtualBox-7.2-7.2.12_174389_el9-1.x86_64.rpm on my Almalinux-9.8 machine, but the kernel modules fail to build. GhostLock (CVE-2026-43499) kernel LPE - patched kernels in testing repo now

Hello AlmaLinux Community! It's me again! Patched kernels for GhostLock (CVE-2026-43499), a newly disclosed Linux kernel local privilege escalation, are available in the almalinux-testing repository right now, and we need your help verifying them before we promote them to production. WHY THIS MATTERS GhostLock is a use-after-free in the kernel's rtmutex priority inheritance code. An unprivileged local user can exploit it to gain root, and it works from inside a container to escape to the host. No special capabilities are required, and all supported AlmaLinux releases (8, 9, and 10) are affected. The bug has been present in the kernel since 2011. Our core team has backported the upstream fix to every affected branch, and ALESCo approved shipping ahead of the CentOS Stream / RHEL update. Community testing is what gets these kernels safely into production, so please help if you can. HOW TO TEST 1. Install the testing repo: sudo dnf install -y almalinux-release-testing 2. Update the kernel: sudo dnf update 'kernel*' --enablerepo=almalinux-testing 3. Reboot: sudo reboot 4. John, Testing with speedtest isn't going to be too reliable. I'd suggest an internal network test like iperf3 between local machines to rule out outside factors (the internet). My almalinux-9.8 desktop machine has suddenly suffered a severe network (wired connection) slowdown. My ubuntu-24 laptop on the same network (wifi connection) is much faster. cuda12 and cuda13.3 coexistence

Dear All I' am a sysadmin with around 10 computers working with Almalinux 8 and 10 (I am in a small biology research institution) Several of them have cuda installed. We are Amber25 / pmemd24 heavy users so we need cuda-toolkit-12-8 which is the only one compatible. I try to keep my systems updated. I keep updating cuda every time a new one comes around. Recently I found that if I have cuda-toolkit-12-? I cannot install cuda-toolkit-13-3 or what is the same, I cannot update cuda-toolkit. If I have cuda-toolkit-13-3 installed I cannot install cuda-toolkit-12-?. I had no similar problems up until now. cuda-toolkit has been updated without a problem up until 13-2 and all previous 13 versions where coexisting with all 12. No audio after upgrading to 9.8

Hi Folks, This Wednesday I upgraded to 9.8, everything went smoothly as usual. Only after the upgrade the audio was muted one way or another. On my old laptop it still functions but that is no aalternative. The card is different so I guess it has something to do with that, but I can't find it. Five separate high-severity disclosures that affect AlmaLinux have been announced since 2026-05-01: four local-root kernel flaws and one unauthenticated nginx RCE/DoS. If you have lost track of the running tally, you're not alone. Our build servers want a break. The volume of testing reports we received on these rounds is the reason they moved from testing to production as quickly as they did. The Copy Fail rollout in particular was the highest-engagement community call for testing we have ever run. We do not take that lightly. Two patches are still sitting in the testing repository and need community verification before we can move them to production: Fragnesia (CVE-2026-46300) <https://almalinux.org/blog/2026-05-13-fragnesia-cve-2026-46300/> test builds in almalinux-testing were refreshed on 2026-05-14 with additional upstream patches. ssh-keysign-pwn (CVE-2026-46333) <https://almalinux.org/blog/2026-05-15-ssh-keysign-pwn-cve-2026-46333/> is a __ptrace_may_access() logic bug that lets an unprivileged user lift open file descriptors out of a dying privileged process and read root-owned files like /etc/shadow and SSH host keys. Public exploits are already out. The ssh-keysign-pwn build also carries the Fragnesia patches, so installing it gets you both fixes in a single reboot. See the blog post <https://almalinux.org/blog/2026-05-15-ssh-keysign-pwn-cve-2026-46333/> for testing instructions. A quick note on the pace. We are aware that "another week, another root" is becoming an actual schedule rather than a joke. Four local-root kernel disclosures in fifteen days is, statistically speaking, a lot. Here is what is not changing: 1. We will keep shipping ahead of upstream when the severity warrants it. ALESCo has approved every one of these fast-track rollouts so far, and that bar has not moved. If a critical fix is sitting upstream and our users are exposed, we will build it. 2. We will keep our patches strictly compatible. Every kernel and every nginx package we have shipped during this run uses the upstream fix backported and adapted to the AlmaLinux branch, with the same NVR scheme, the same module ABI, and the same repository layout you would expect from a normal Red Hat security update. Drop-in compatibility is the contract, and we are not breaking it to ship faster. 3. We will keep asking you to test. Community verification is what lets us move from testing to production with confidence. The reason these patches have rolled out cleanly so far is that you have been there to catch the things we cannot reproduce in our lab. Hi Scott, Usually by the time the CVE notices roll out the updates have already shipped. A technical glitch that's since been resolved caused this one to be a little behind on the actual rollout. Security updates vs dnf release timing

I'm trying to get a handle on monitoring Almalinux 10 for security updates. I am getting emails but there is usually a lag between the announcement and an actual package. Or so it seems to me. For example I got this one on Friday the 24th, but as of today, the 27th, I have not seen a package for it. What is the normal timeline from Redhat security announcement to Almalinux to package deployment? Not complaining, just wanting to understand. OpenStack RPMs - Call for packaging volunteers

Hi all, the RDO Project[0], that provided OpenStack RPM packages through the CentOS Cloud SIG, is switching to a container-based approach due to lack of maintainers.[1] This means *there will be no more RPM packages for OpenStack versions after 2025.1/Epoxy unless new maintainers come up*. *This is a call across the EL and OpenStack communities for volunteer maintainers of RPM build pipelines*. Access db slow

Hello. I have a 8.10 version as a file server and 4.19 samba on a gigabit local network. Although coping on network is fast, accessing Access db files, is slow. The same files on a common win 11 pc is very fast. I try socket options in smb.conf but the performance is worse. Is there a suggestion? Thank you in advance. Nikos.

Hello! When I enter the command grub2-mkconfig, I get: $ sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg Generating grub configuration file ... Adding boot menu entry for UEFI Firmware Settings ... done But my system isn't UEFI, it's legacy. It's a virtual machine. The /etc/grub.d/10_linux script isn't running. -- Best regards, Sergey

AlmaLinux 9.7 Firefox slow to launch

Hi, on a machine with AlmaLinux 9.7 installed with KDE Desktop Environment. It seems that once the KDE DE is loaded and if/when Firefox is launched it just takes a long time (30 seconds or so), almost like it fails to launch. Multiple launch attempts can be made and eventually Firefox does launch but in most cases then other instances that launch need to be closed (due to multiple launch attempts). I do not know why this is. The machine is a Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 72e small with 8GiB memory and a SSD installed. Is there a way that I can troubleshoot this and possibly get Firefox to load up more easily? -Thanks

It hasn't been built for EPEL10 yet but there is an open request for it: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2384310 fastfetch is nice. Summary of the X11 Forwarding Issue in AlmaLinux 10 Several users have reported that X11 forwarding no longer works as expected in AlmaLinux 10. This behavior originates from upstream RHEL 10 changes, where legacy X11 components and untrusted forwarding paths have been restricted for security and Wayland-related architectural updates. Common symptoms include: ssh -X / ssh -Y producing no GUI output X11Forwarding yes having no effect Missing or non-functional X11 compatibility packages Wayland defaults interfering with legacy X11 workflows Workarounds: Enable X11 forwarding explicitly in sshd_config Install compatibility packages: xorg-x11-xauth, xorg-x11-apps, xorg-x11-xinit Use a compatible X server on the client Use ssh -Y (trusted forwarding) in secure environments Consider alternatives such as VNC, SPICE, or X2Go for stable graphical access Upstream changes indicate that X11 forwarding is no longer guaranteed to function without additional configuration, and users may need to adjust workflows accordingly.

Alma linux 10 httpd log shows read only file system

in /var/log/httpd/error_log it is saying Read-only file system. This is not the case the actual file system is fine. I can "echo 1 > file" just fine. Newly built VM. my CGI seems to be running just fine - as long as I echo to stdout - but when I try to write to a file - I get the above error. What is different on Alma 10 - that to httpd its read-only selinux is turned off. I copied my configs over from Alma 9 which work . and rebooted Thanks Jerry

In AlmaLInux 8 and 9 there was a clearsilver and a clearsilver-devel package (a HTML templating engine). Our software relies on this, but unfortunately the packages are missing in AlmaLinux 10. Will the eventually be re-added? Thanks, Marc

AlmaLinux 10 httpd cgi permisisons

I have AlmaLinux 9 running just fine I am trying to setup AlmaLinux 10 the same way. I used the same config files for httpd I am running httpd SuexecUserGroup as a different user and group - just like 9. however I am getting an error on 10 that I cannot write to a file. the file is in my allowed conf files httpd is running as Apache My cgi script does ALLOW me to call whoami - and it shows my user correctly ALL my files and log files are owned by my user and writable. Is there something different in 10 that I need? Thank you Jerry

AlmaLinux 9 and XFCE sound problem

Hey there, I installed Almalinux OS 9 on my notebook. I installed XFCE but I'm getting problem with audio because xfce4-pulseaudio plugin is missing and I can't change sound volume except on the specific program that play the music (In my case audacious and firefox). Currently I don't know if I must open a "please build xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin" on epel or if I should use something due to pipewire. I enabled also epel-testing to check if the package was in testing but seems missing. Someone has the same problem? Thank you in advance.

openldap with replication how-to

Hello everybody, I want to implement a fault tolerant setup of openldap, and I was looking for a tutorial or how-to from alma about how to accomplish so. I am aware of the openldap documentation examples, but I find that having an article from the distro that you're using generally has a lot of value. Are there such resources that I was not able to find? Otherwise I would happily contribute to the wiki (I did not find the mailing list for the documentation SIG). Best regards, Andrei

AlmaLinux 10 and packages metadata

Hi list, I'm using AlmaLinux 10.0 and I cannot list information about updates package metadata like bugfix or enhancement while security metadata are available. If I run: # dnf updateinfo list --security I get all security metadata (in case of Alma) ALSA advisories. If I run: # dnf updateinfo list --bugfix or: # dnf updateinfo list --enhancement It does not reports data. The bugfix and enhancement metadata are missing? They will be available in the future? That got me a little further — reFIND works, it finds the EFI grub image on the Alma USB stick, and it attempts to boot it. Alas, it gets no further than that: I get a message about booting with default grub options of '', and then a white cursor, and nothing further.

Installer on 2012 Mac Mini failing to boot

Hi folks, I'm wrestling with an odd problem in the lab and hoping someone has some insights. I have a 2012 Mac Mini (6,1 - Core i5-3210M) and I'm unable to get Alma installed on it, as I can't get the installer to actually boot. Thus far, this is what I've tried: - Alma DVD or Boot ISO on USB stick: Mac can see the stick as bootable, but selecting to boot results in a black screen. - Ventoy with Alma DVD ISO: Booting in "normal mode" results in the same as above (black screen). However, booting in "grub mode" gets me to the first installer-select screen (install/validate/troubleshoot). Any option selected from there, however, even "install in non-graphical mode", results in a black screen. Doing some searches online, it looks like Macs do something weird with EFI (a Mac doing weird things with partitions — what a shock, right?), so I guess it's possible that's messing with the installer. Oddly, however, a Fedora 42 install stick boots right up and happily installs on the same hardware without any issue. Anyone manage to get this type of hardware working with Alma? TIA, Jos

Autofs: too many open files issue

Hi, We are running AlmaLinux 9.3 on several nodes that normally use autofs to mount different kinds of remote directories. Since the last week, we are seeing these errors: automount[2150866]: open_pipe:161: failed to open pipe: Too many open files And automount stops working. Following up on this, using rmmod to unload the kvm and kvm_intel kernel modules allows VirtualBox to load my virtual machines, but that still begs the question "why did this happen?" Looking at the .config files for the current and older kernels I have on my almalinux machine (5.14.0-503.38.1.el9_5.x86_64, 5.14.0-503.40.1.el9_5.x86_64, and 5.14.0-570.12.1.el9_6.x86_64), I see that CONFIG_X86_VMX_FEATURE_NAMES=y and CONFIG_VMXNET3=m are set in all of them, so why does it fail with VirtualBox only in the latest kernel? Setup of default route on multi-homed host

I have a system that is using Almalinux 8.10 that has several active networks for the segregation of traffic according to purpose. Whenever this machine is rebooted, it is random on which interface is selected to be the default route, with two interfaces being selected for default route, only one of which actually connects to the outside network. How can I force that the true default route is always chosen? I have attached the output of the route command before and after deleting the erroneous route. Hi list, I would like to know how works bugfixes on AlmaLinux when a user report a moderate/critical bug. For example, some times ago I found a bug in Debian stable kernel relative to MD devices. I contacted the developer, helped the team with testing to reproduce the issue, testing patches. After some day patch applied on testing and unstable and after ~15 days patch was released on debian stable kernel (wit a backport) and on backports kernel. How works this on AlmaLinux? I know that I can open bugs and help but what about timing on patchs release? I can contact the "kernel team" directly like in Debian? About rdma service in Almalinux9

Hi, I'm deploying a small cluster based on Almalinux9 using a dedicated cluster environment. When deploying infiniband support, the provided Ansible scripts try to launch the rdma service and it fails. In my old CentOS8 cluster, rdma-core provides the rdma service startup file /usr/lib/systemd/system/rdma.service in rdma-core-26.0-8.el8 to launch the rdma service In my new Almalinux9 cluster this file is no more provided by rdma-core-51.0-1.el9 And I'm unable to understand if it is no more necessary ("automagically" activated) or if I need an other package by looking at various documentations and https://github.com/linux-rdma/rdma-core. But I'm not very familiar with this stack as usually it works out of the box (so I never delved deeply into the documentation before) Could someone help me to clarify this ? Thanks Patrick

AlmaLinux 9.3 and libvirtd problem

Hi list, I'm running AlmaLinux 9.3 and I'm running several virtual machines using qemu-kvm and libvirtd ( and virt-manager). 3 VMs starts during system boot (configured with "virsh autostart VMNAME"). All works as expected until I loaded a old vm config file. When I tried to run "systemctl reload libvirtd" I got: "libvirtd.service is not active, cannot reload." It is enable on boot and running "systemctl status libvirtd" I get: Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/libvirtd.service; enabled; preset: disabled) Active: inactive (dead) since Thu 2024-01-25 16:32:40 CET; 4min 55s ago Duration: 5min 14.530s It reports that it is inactive (really dead) because I can't find it inside process table. Rebooting the system, I found libvirtd process with argument "--timeout=120" and after 120 seconds it dies. Reading libvirtd systemd unit I found Environment=LIBVIRTD_ARGS="--timeout 120" and from the man page I get: "t, --timeout *SECONDS* Exit after timeout period (in seconds), provided there are neither any client connections nor any running domains." Here I found something strange. On boot I have 3 running domains but libvirtd dies after 120 seconds. To load new configuration I need to run restart and virt-manager works without problem also if libvirtd is not running. This is a misconfiguration or it is a bug? Thank you in advance. Alessandro.

Cannot login to user account

Hi, I am seeing some problems with my alma9 installation. 1. I locked the machine with superkey + l, then I came back and unlocked it. 2. I saw that the upper case keys were on by default and I had to turn on caps-lock to turn back on the lower case keys. 3. The number pad did not show numbers, but the signs you get when you press shift, i.e. !@#$... 4. The arrow keys did not do the arrow thing, but they showed upper case letters, A, F, I do not remember the others. So I restarted. Then I tried to log in but: 1. When I put the right password, It looks like it will log in, because the screen goes black, however it comes back to the login screen without telling me anything else. 2. I know this is not a password issue, because when I put a wrong password, it tells me that the password is wrong. 3. I can log in as root. 4. I can do su - username and log in from there with my normal password. I do not recall doing anything special with the computer. Do you know what might be happening? Cheers.

Kickstart installs with isolinux (insecure boot) fails, same Kickstart works with EFI(secureboot)

I have been working with AlmaLinux 8 for a couple of years using various iterations AlmaLinux 8, with my systems(5 of them) currently using 8.10. I am now in the process of validating install media to move to version 9.4, using kickstart to manage the initial configuration of these hosts. The kickstart file sets up the network,decides the host name, and sets up a complex partitioning scenario. Initially I tested this using secure boot, without any issue. I repeated the same install, on the same hardware, using the same kickstart file, only this time using the legacy boot (insecure). I have verified that this is an issue with insecure boot, as I then did a manual install of a server+graphics, along with development tools, and then took the resulting kickstart file, made the required changes so that the partitioning would work, and then attempted to do a kickstart install using this minimal kickstart, with the same results of success for the EFI boot, and failure with the isolinux boot. I did check, and the two commands to the kernel appear to be identical, but the insecure boot is not able to find the kickstart file. Has anyone else seen this behavior? Anyone found a work-around?

Almalinux 9.4 import LVM VG bug?

Hi list, on my Almalinux 9.4 I tried to import LVM Volume Group from another system. When I attached disks on my workstation, pvscan or vgimport does not found any lvm devices. Reading here: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/lvm-operations-might-fail-on-a-fedor… seems that renaming /etc/lvm/devices/system.devices permits the system to read lvm devices and able to import an existing volume. This is a bug or a wanted behaviour? File system.devices is required? I should restore it? Thank you in advance Alessandro.

RPM creation problem

Hi list, I'm creating an RPM package for gocryptfs on AlmaLinux 9.3 I'm using the source with deps (vendoring) because deps are too much. During the process rpmbuild returns: gocryptfs-debugsource-2.4.0-1.el9.x86_64 error: Empty %files file /root/rpmbuild/BUILD/gocryptfs_v2.4.0_src-deps/debugsourcefiles.list To avoid this I can add: %global debug_package %{nil} and the problem is solved also if the build-id links are generated. But, here there is a problem. I read that for $arch packages a debug package will be created and if some error is reported there is something wrong on the SPEC file. Why debugsourcefiles.list is empty? What is causing this? Thank you in advance. Alessandro.

OpenSSH policies / system crypto policy equivalence

Hello, I am trying to write a crypto policy modifier to disable some kex algorithms in OpenSSH (not the one in the example, but the issue is the same). Reading //usr/share/crypto-policies/python/policygenerators/openssh.py/, I find mappings like /'ECDHE-SECP521R1-SHA2-512': 'ecdh-sha2-nistp521'/, so I tried to write in a pmod /key_exchange = -ECDHE-SECP521R1-SHA2-512/ When I try to load it with update-crypto-policies, it fails stating /Bad value of policy property `key_exchange`: `ECDHE-SECP521R1-SHA2-512`/, and in fact If I check //usr/share/crypto-policies/python/cryptopolicies/alg_lists.py, /ECDHE-SECP521R1-SHA2-512 is not defined there. So, how can I disable in OpenSSH kex/algorithms/etc that are defined in //usr/share/crypto-policies/python/policygenerators/openssh.py /but not in //usr/share/crypto-policies/python/cryptopolicies/alg_lists.py?/ Best regards Francesco Di Nucci

Nftables breaks ...

LS Updating AlmaLinux 9.3 to 9.4, the package Nftables seems to get upgraded from 1.0.4 to 1.0.9.1 And after the upgrade, netfilter completely blocks any in- and outbound network traffic. Removing version 1.0.9 and reinstalling the Alma9.3-baseos-package nftables-1.0.4 fixes the problem. Could it be that some of the nft-kernel modules aren't loaded by the package ? Anyone any idea ? Hi, I'm trying to install KDE from EPEL on AlmaLinux 9.3, but got several errors. I have enable crb repo and EPEL repo. Error: Problem: cannot install both initscripts-10.11.6-1.el9.x86_64 from baseos and initscripts-10.11.5-1.el9.x86_64 from @System - package network-scripts-10.11.5-1.el9.x86_64 from @System requires initscripts(x86-64) = 10.11.5-1.el9, but none of the providers can be installed - cannot install the best update candidate for package initscripts-10.11.5-1.el9.x86_64 - problem with installed package network-scripts-10.11.5-1.el9.x86_64 (try to add '--allowerasing' to command line to replace conflicting packages or '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages or '--nobest' to use not only best candidate packages)/ if I do a/--allowerasing/, update does proceed but it removes package /network-scripts-10.11.5-1.el9.x86_64/ , then, at next reboot network is not configured anymore, indeed networks-scripts (ifup ...) is not there anymore did someone broke something in packages dependencies ? thanks . Almalinux and integritysetup speed problem

Hi list, I'm trying on a spare machine dm-integrity with mdadm raid1. This is an old machine (i7-2600k). I'm using 2x500GB wd caviar black SATA3. I'm trying to run some test and see how much performance changes using dm-integrity. First I created a raid1 with mdadm and checked the performances and writing 50G I got 100 MB/s Then I destroied the md device and on every disk I run: # integritysetup format --integrity xxhash64 /dev/sdb1 # integritysetup format --integrity xxhash64 /dev/sdc1 During this process the performances was good ~95MB/s. After this I opened the devices with: # integritysetup open integrity xxhash64 /dev/sdb1 sdb1 # integritysetup open integrity xxhash64 /dev/sdc1 sdc1 and created the mdadm array with: # mdadm --create /dev/md10 --level=raid1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/mapper/sdb1 /dev/mapper/sdc1 and reading on /proc/mdstat I got this: [>....................] resync = 1.1% (4929792/443175424) finish=677.3min speed=10782K/sec Why there is so big drop on speed during the sync? I'm missing something? I'll need 11 hours to sync 2x500GB hdd? Why so slow? Before this I tried the same on a newer machine with i7 8700k and 2x2TB WD gold and I get a drop sync speed at ~35MB/s. Why? They are RHEL binded packages (licenses etc...)? I noticed also that there is a rolling appstream which includes firefox 102 and other app. Is that rolling appstream available for AlmaLinux? ZFS and AlmaLinux 9.X

Hi list, I would install ZFS on my backup server. It runs Almalinux 9.3 and actually it saves data on RAID1 MDADM. From what I read I can install ZFS from OpenZFS repositories for EL and choose between kABI tracking or DKMS. I read that using kABI module I will have problem when a new minor release will be released because I must wait that the kABI module from OpenZFS repo team should be built to support the new kernel. Have someone used the kABI module? How many time you need to wait the new module? Are they quick releasing it? The other method is using DKMS, so at every kernel update I need a DKMS recompilation with a possible problem during recompilation. Ok I will have the old module with the previous kernel that will work. How much DKMS recompilation problem occours? What is the best method in your experience? Thank you in advance. Alessandro.

Using bluetooth serial (RFCOMM) on AlmaLinux 9

I am running the latest AlmaLinux 9 on a Raspberry Pi 3/4 computer. I want to communication with a Bluetooth device that uses the serial communication (SPP) profile. Using bluetoothctl I see the device, and I pair with it. However, I can not establish the serial link, i.e. I don’t have a /dev/rfcomm0 device to communicate. In other Linux distributions there exists the rfcomm command to connect to a Bluetooth serial device, but in AlmaLinux 9 this is not available. How can I establish a serial link over Bluetooth, then? The rfcomm kernel is present in AlmaLinux 9. Thanks, mb

Hello Almalinux Users, Glad to find you. This lists.almalinux.org is doing what I'm hoping to set up, Listserv on AlmaLinux. Is there a step by step set-up you can share? Or tips on getting it working? After three days of server rebuilds, I'm getting closer. Got LDAP working on AL9, for example, but wonder if there is a better way, like a working package that just installs everything with prompts. Thanks

Kernel panic booting Alma 9.2 and 9.3 on 9.3 VM with defaults

I'm trying to get a VM of Alma 9 running on a fully updated Alma 9 host. It's really simple: 1) I start virt-manager 2) Add machine, default settings, click "next... next..." * Local install media /home/AlmaLinux-9.3-x86_64-minimal.iso [X] Automatically detect from installation media/source * 1536 memory, 2 CPUs (default) * 20 GB storage (default) * Name: almalinux9 (default) 3) When it boots, I choose "Install AlmaLinux...." 4) Kernel panics! See attached screenshot result. What am I missing? Hopefully useful information to follow, screenshot attached. XFS and COW operation

Hi, I read from here https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/xfs/patch/20181110115104.30293-4-hch@l… that I can enable COW on XFS fs but I can't find any switch for always_cow unders sysfs. I'm running AlmaLinux 9.3. Reading the man page of mkfs.xfs I found: "reflink=value This option enables the use of a separate reference count btree index in each allocation group. The value is either 0 to disable the feature, or 1 to create a reference count btree in each allocation group. The reference count btree enables the sharing of physical extents between the data forks of different files, which is commonly known as "reflink". Unlike traditional Unix filesystems which assume that every inode and logical block pair map to a unique physical block, a reflink-capable XFS filesystem removes the uniqueness requirement, allowing up to four billion arbitrary inode/logical block pairs to map to a physical block. If a program tries to write to a multiply-referenced block in a file, the write will be redirected to a new block, and that file's logical-to-physical mapping will be changed to the new block ("copy on write"). This feature enables the creation of per-file snapshots and deduplication. It is only available for the data forks of regular files.By default, mkfs.xfs will create reference count btrees and therefore will enable the reflink feature." AlmaLinux 9.1 Problem on MDADM raid1

Hi Jack, I'm sorry to bother you during holidays. I encountered a strange problem installing AlmaLinux 9.1 on a RAID1 (MDADM) with the current configuration: - /boot/efi on md125 - swap on md126 - / on md127 disks are 2 SSD MLC Type. After the installation, if I reboot the system I get: "md: md125 stopped" (it is printed many times like in a loop) alternated with: "systemd-shutdown[1]: Not all MD devices stopped, 1 left Stopping MD Devices Stopping MD /dev/md125 (9:125)" and the system hangs on this loop until I cut the power. I encountered this issue on my Workstation with Asus Prime Z490-A / i9-10850k. I tried with another workstation that runs on Asus Prime Z370-A / i7 8700K, to exclude bad SATA controller and bad cables. Also on the second workstation the problem is found. I tried to replicate this using 9.0 ISO. The problem does not occur until I update to 9.1 I tried also with 8.7. No problem here. I tried also RockyLinux 9.1 and got the same problem but with different messages: "block device autoconfig is deprecated and will removed" alternated with: "blkdev_get_no_open: 270 callbacks suppressed." To stop the machine I need to cut the power. I tried also Debian 11.5 without problems. So seems that the problem is 9.1 related. Actually I can't test the same with RHEL 9.1 but probably the problem will occour also on RHEL 9.1 There is a way to fix this or I should wait an upgrade? Thank you in advance.

Hi, I need to buy a SATA3 PCI-E 3.0 2x controller with 4 or 6 port. It will be installed on my workstation. I need to use AlmaLinux or at least Fedora. Disabling automatic updates

Hi, I have several Alma Linux 8 and Alma Linux 9 boxes. Some of them (strangely not all) are running automatic updates: - some boxes at boot time - other with a pop-up in a user session (requesting also to reboot). These session are using Gnome or KDE I've done some investigation with google, disabling automatic download for dnf, but automatic updates still occur and I do not found where I can disable this. That looks strange for me is that deployment is kickstarted based with similar kickstart file with the same initial rpm base (then I update all the rpms with dnf) This behaviour is not correct in a professional environment as we must have stable libraries versions and run updates intentionally. Notification for insert of optical disk

Hi there, we did make an upgrade of our headless appliance (a DVD read-roboter) from CentOs 6.9 to AlmaLinux 8.8. CentOS 6.9 did fire a UDEV-notification every time the DVD-Tray did something (insert cd, read CD, eject,...) and we could react on that. AlmaLinux 8.8 now uses systemd, therefore the UDEV-notifications only happen, if the filesystem of the media is correctly identified - which does not happen if for example the media is scratched and therefore not readable. Now there is a CD inside the tray - and we do have no clue. If we use a vanilla AlmaLinux 8.8 with KDE and insert a scratched CD - after some time the CD gets ejected - and we have not found out, which service does this. Is there a possibility to get notified, when a CD is inserted - regardless of the readability. Support for Mono vbc.exe

I have installed a variety of mono packages from the repo (as shown below), as well as mono-basic which was part of FC38 repo (to get vbnc.exe). While overall working well, I still need the vbc.exe program. This is part of mono-complete in other distros, but it seem FC/RH family of RPM's don't offer this. Would anyone know how to get vbc.exe into a AlmaLinux 9 system? Email to root not sending

Hey everyone: I did a fresh install of AlmaLinux 9.1 on a server. I then set the root email address to my admin email address in /etc/aliases and ran newaliases. But, when I send email to root, it does not come to me. I see sendmail is installed on the machine already and I tested outgoing connections to port 25. Any ideas? AlmaLinux 9.1 and rsync problem

Hey there, I'm using AlmaLinux 9.1 as my backup server using a script. I noticed that if I run: rsync --cc=xxh128.... it reports: unknown checksum name: xxh128 while inside the rsync manual page this checksum is documented. Running rsync --version I get: Checksum list: md5 md4 none Seems that other checksum type where disabled on compilation but reported on documentation. The absence of xxh128/xxh64 is a bug or them are disabled by default on compilation? Thank you in advance.

I all, on a freshly installed Alma Linux 8.7 I can see a syncthing process communicating over https to a remote unknown server. Syncthing is installed automaticaly but what does this process with the remote server ? How do I keep my server from "sleeping". It shuts down, but power light is still on and nothing will bring it back except power cycling. I've tried everything I can find on disabling sleep and hibernation but it still keeps "sleeping". What good is a web server that doesn't stay up and running?

AlmaLinux on WSL initscripts

Hello, I’m having an issue with Windows 10, WSL, and AlmaLinux 8. WSL is at version 1.0.3.0 so what I am trying to do should work. But since it’s easy to blame Microsoft, I am going to do that for the time being. 😊 I am trying to use systemd within WSL running AlmaLinux. AlmaLinux is fully updated on 8.7. I edited /etc/wsl.conf to include [boot] and setting systemd as true. I’ve restarted WSL (and the Windows computer), and still for the life of me, I cannot get AlmaLinux to load systemd. The fallback should be using initscripts. Obviously, RHEL (so AlmaLinux), have moved to systemd but there is an initscripts package. I installed that and even restarted WSL for good measure, but unfortunately it redirects service to systemctl and then it complains that the system was booted as init and not systemd and it can’t operate. So my question is, has anyone either got systemd working on AlmaLinux under WSL or has anyone got initscripts working? I’ve been Googling this like mad but all I’ve been able to find are articles regarding Ubuntu. Thanks in advance if anyone can provide some insight! Hello, I just noticed this behavior because of an trivy scan I enabled podman module RHEL8 and installed podman: dnf module enable container-tools:rhel8 dnf install podman rpm -qa podman podman-4.2.0-6.module_el8.7.0+3385+a9526ac7.x86_64 rpm -qa container-selinux container-selinux-2.189.0-1.module_el8.6.0+3336+00d107d5.noarch if I switch to container-tools:4.0 then the correct container-selinux module get installed dnf module switch-to container-tools:4.0 rpm -qa podman podman-4.0.2-8.module_el8.7.0+3344+5bcd850f.x86_64 rpm -qa container-selinux container-selinux-2.189.0-1.module_el8.7.0+3344+5bcd850f.noarch The whole Module "container-tools:rhel8" seems messed up fuse-overlayfs 1.9-1.module_el8.6.0+3070+1510fbd1 get installed, but should be 1.9-1.module_el8.7.0+3344+5bcd850f I cannot replicate it on an RHEL machine, so I don't know if this is an upstream RHEL issue Thanks in advance If you need any more infos, just let me know Greetings Dominik

I have a new HPE Prioliant gen10plus that I will be setting up with RAID1. I have been asking questions on the Centos-user list, but my plan is to install AlmaLinux 9.1 And I have been following comments about problems with RAID support in it. Meanwhile in my digging into RAID on my gen10+ install I find: https://downloads.linux.hpe.com/SDR/project/lsrrb/ And lsrrb. It is available for RH8. Can I get it to work with AL9.1? should I for a single server? It seems to use PXE, TFTP, and kickstart. A lot of work, is it worth it? Or is there a short cut? thanks for any help you can provide.

mail server platform

Past time to upgrade my email server I run my own setup with RedSleeve6-arm. I never successfully got the Centos7-arm working, but if interested you can see what I was doing at: http://medon.htt-consult.com/Centos7-mailserver.html I want something as turnkey as possible with RAID1 drives. So first level question is a small Almalinux platform with RAID. Will have to be Intel, not ARM, as the mail software tends to be Intel. I do want low power. Note my network server is a little, low-power QNAP TS-230 and I had to replace a drive with errors, so I am sold on RAID. Thus first a recommendation on a platform. 4TB drives would be overkill for my mail needs. Then email software. My current setup is file-based messages. So I have to think about that for any migration, but I SO want out of maintaining the software myself. Running an updater is all I want at this age (now 72). I found: https://geekflare.com/self-hosted-email-server/ And iRedMail looks interestingly easy for me. Modoboa looks a little harder. Mail will be the ONLY think on this system, so I should not need any docker setups. Anyone can point me where to get going? thanks

Error: Problem: conflicting requests - nothing provides python3-wheel-wheel needed by python3-virtualenv-20.17.1-1.el9.noarch (try to add '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages or '--nobest' to use not only best candidate packages) any idea what could be the problem? is this known? Centos 7.9 transition blocked, how to solve??

Hi all, My home desktop machine runs Centos 7.9 Due to the Centos issues I want to migrate to Almalinux (8 or later). I updated Centos 7.9 I found a/the site with the Elevate/Leapp route, so I started there. AlmaLinux 9.1 and SELinux problem

Hi, I'm running AlmaLinux 9.1 on VM to play with SELinux and trying to create a custom policy for an app. This app is written in Python and wait files to be processed (uploaded via sftp from another host). It read data from this file and then save them on postgresql DB. If something is wrong with the data, it will send an email. I followed this: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/ht… Generating a custom policy, a permissive line is inserted in the policy: permissive example_t; that, if I'm not wrong, also if denials are found it runs the policy as permissive. Commenting this line and reload the policy my program does not work anymore and I receive this error: psycopg2.connect(127.0.0.1): could not receive data from server: Permission denied could not send SSL negotiation packet: Permission denied The strange thing is that if I run: # ausearch -m AVC -ts recent I don't receive new denied AVC. I tried also to read PostgreSQL side logs but nothing useful. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance.

Hi, I'm unable tu run a PXE boot + Kickstart based install for Alma Linux 8.6 on a DELL Precision 3571 laptop. The workflow hangs with the message: "/started cancel waiting for multipath siblings of nvme0n//1/" I find this is an issue known by Alma Linux (https://bugs.almalinux.org/view.php?id=209&nbn=6) but the proposed workaround do not work (or I dot not understand it): I've removed ./usr/lib/udev/prefixdevname in initrd.img as prefixdevname-tools was not found but this make a Kernel panic! And there are no details about the initrd.img modification steps. Any idea how to solve this (I have 3 laptops to deploy) ? Is there a way to use older boot images for Alma Linux ? My setup works fine for an old DELL Precision 3520 used for testing before deploying on these new 3571. Thanks for your advices Patrick

Hello All, I started the process to upgrade from Centos 7 to Almalinux, but ran into a snag with the drivers: - mptspi - mptscsih - mptbase I believe these are vmware drivers, but couldn't find a workaround since you cant just remove those drivers like it was a floppy. Migration issue

Greetings, I'm trying to upgrade (update) a very old CentOS7 setup. I have, I think, successfully updated the CentOS7 to CentOS8. The /etc/redhat-release file says 8.5, kernel version however is still 3.10, so I might have messed up some steps. Also, this CentOS7 was a KDE custom setup. During this process, I was running out of the GUI/DE - which at a point reverted to CLI only (inside a VMWare Workstation 16.2.x Virtual Machine). I have tried to get KDE installed, but alas, no joy. So I decided to follow the upgrade path to Alma Linux. AlmaLinux 9 and libvirt-guest bug

Hey there, I noticed that libvirt-guests service is installed and enabled but the configuration file /etc/sysconfig/libvirt-guests is missing. I noticed this also on RHEL9. I populated the missing file with one of almalinux 8 and it works as expected. Running "dnf whatprovides /etc/sysconfig/libvirt-guests" does not report any match. This missing is a bug or a wanted behaviour? Thank you in advance.

cockpit motd doesn't display

Hello Everyone, On my AlmaLinux 9 installs, the cockpit motd I'm used to seeing upon login via ssh isn't being shown. I've looked at the symlinks that get created when the unit is enabled and everything appears to be fine, yet no motd noting that cockpit is available. I get the inactive message just fine. As soon as it's activated, the inactive message dissapears and doesn't get replaced with the active one. Has anyone else encountered this? -- Ranbir

AlmaLinux vs. RHEL packages

I was comparing the packages in the AlmaLinux9 ISO with those in the RHEL 9 ISO and found differences. Most the naming differences are "alma" versions of the rpms, similar to these: < libstdc++-devel-11.2.1-9.4.el9.alma.i686.rpm < libstdc++-devel-11.2.1-9.4.el9.alma.x86_64.rpm --- > libstdc++-devel-11.2.1-9.4.el9.i686.rpm > libstdc++-devel-11.2.1-9.4.el9.x86_64.rpm What does it mean when there is a package name difference like this? There also seemed to be a package here or there which only existed in one of the releases. For example, RHEL has > virt-who-1.31.22-1.el9_0.noarch.rpm but not AlmaLinux. Conversely AlmaLinux has < plotnetcfg-0.4.1-18.el9.x86_64.rpm but not RHEL. Is there any conclusion I should draw from this? .. Lana (lana.deere(a)gmail.com)

Unable to use xfce desktop

I just reinstalled almalinux-9 after an selinux screw-up and cannot get xfce to work. I've installed all the requisite packages, but the gdm login screen no longer shows an option to select a different desktop (i.e. no "gear" icon). I tried pointing ./xinitrc to "exec /usr/bin/xfce4-session" but no joy. I installed the switchdesk package and ran "switchdesk Xfce" program reports "Desktop now set up to run xfce" but logout/login still comes up as the butt-ugly almalinux default desktop. Hey there, I have installed AlmaLinux 9 on my workstation. I know that I should wait until x.2 minor but if anyone wonn't test since first releases no bugs will be discovered. First problem: I'm not able to install nvidia driver (from nvidia.com) using dkms. I tried the latest driver and the previous one running under 8.6. Actually I'm running nouveau driver. So to solve the problem I did imported all my old VMs. No problem here just more work. I noticed that /etc/sysconfig/ files libvirtd and libvirt-guests are not more available. I always used them to config "start on boot" shutdown parallel vms or shutdown timeout. Where I can set this option in EL9? I don't know if the following is an issue, but running dnf module list I can't get appstream (it is empty). Good day. I've just installed the AlmaLinux 9 on Raspberry Pi 4 (aarch64). I've tried to enable all kind of repos possible, but I couldn't find the Filezilla package. I thought it was strange, because on another distros I can simply enable remi and/or epel and download it. Does you guys have any idea of how can I get it? Another packages as firefox, @xfce go normally. Tks in advance; Andrey

AlmaLinux9 problem on gnome shell extension

Hey there, I'm using AlmaLinux 9 on my workstation. Actually I'm using GNOME and I have installed two extensions: 1. dash-to-dock 2. systemMonitor I noticed some strange behavious. On the dash I can move the icon to change their order but the selected element goes to the end of the list. About systemMonitor, it placed on the top bar but it has some glitches. When I pass the mouse pointer it refresh data. I don't know if this is a NVIDIA driver problem or a bug of the extension. I don't have any other video issue. I'm using NVIDIA driver downloaded from nvidia.com. Someone is experimenting the same behaviour with these 2 extensions? Thank you in advance. Alessandro.

Alma9: inconsistent ability to boot Windows VM guest

So, I'm trying to track down an ODD issue with Alma 9. I have a Win2016 .qcow2 system image, 4 core, 8 GB RAM I'm trying to move from one host to the other. Both are running Alma 9, with all updates applied. Both have been configured with similar/identical software. ZFS is the file store in both cases. The Windows VM starts and works fine on one but not the other. But why? Both are running fresh installs of Alma 9 from the same installation disk. System 1 "Delta" Xeon 2620 Blade server 128 GB RAM OpenZFS RAIDZ1 on 3x 500 GB SATA SSDs Alma 9 X86/64 Running numerous Virtual Machines Windows Server 2016 runs great System 2 "Grumman" I7 4790 16 GB RAM OpenZFS RAIDZ1 on 3x 250 GB SATA SSDs Alma 9 X86/64 Runs only 1 Virtual Machine Windows Server 2016 boots to "black screen of death" During the "black screen of death", top shows 4 cores running at 100% CPU forever. I've tried the 3x power off to trigger recovery mode and that, too, resulted in the same result. There is nothing in the Grumman's system log. Grumman's CPU is a bit older, but a 2620 is also pretty old. Any idea where I could look for resolution? Thanks

Lost my grub2

I just did a BIOS update on my Lenovo Ideacenter running Almalinux-8.6 and Windows-10. Of curse, the update had to be done from Windows, and once completed it has disabled my grub bootloader and goes directly into Windows. I can boot linux using SystemRescueCD, but grub2-install fails thus: [john@alma ~]$ sudo grub2-install /dev/sda grub2-install: error: this utility cannot be used for EFI platforms because it does not support UEFI Secure Boot. If I disable "Secure Boot" I get "no operating system found." I've also tried SuperGrub, BootRepair, and (from Windows) EasyBCD. SuperGrub fails in a manner similar o that described above. BootRepair fails with "Please enable a repository containing the [grub-efi-amd64-signed] packages in the software sources of AlmaLinux 8.6 (Sky Tiger) (mapper/almalinux-root). Then try again." but no indication of where or how this repo should be added. The SourceForge page for BootRepair doesn't show a way to ask for help. EasyBCD fails to find my linux installation. What are my options? Should I re-install almalinux and hope it can fix grub? Seems like a pile of work for what ought to be a simple task. For the time being, I can use my almalinux installation by booting from SystemRescueCD nd using its "findroot" boot option. Almost everything works, except, notably, nfs. EFI PXE kickstart help

I am trying to do an AlmaLinux 9 network install on an EFI machine but I am having trouble getting the initial boot to work. I have the equivalent working for BIOS machines so I'm reasonably confident my kickstart file and http server are set up properly. When I try to boot from the EFI machine, I see the DHCP messages in /var/log/messages on the tftp server so it looks like the client gets an address, but then the client reports an error and goes to back to the boot menu, clearing the error message so that I have no chance to read the error. AlmaLinux Errata Format

Hi List, currently errata are not present in ML so I'm trying to create a script that help me when a new ALSA/ALBA is released on AlmaLinux Errata. The problem is that the page (https://errata.almalinux.org/index.html) releases data with javascript table (a sort of datables) and if I try to download the page with wget, curl or lynx it reports that JS should be enabled. There is another way to retrieve these data: for example a simple txt.file or other sources? Thank you in advance.

GDM: DisallowTCP

I try to configure GDM on a fresh Alma 8.5 installation to allow local connections to the running Xorg via part 6000. For that, I added "DisallowTCP=false" in section "[security]" of file "/etc/gdm/custom.conf", but this setting is always ignored by GDM. GDM starts Xorg always with the arguments "-nolisten tcp". What do I have to do so that GDM passes the option "-listen tcp" to the started Xorg? Regards, ChrisF682

Hi list, I would like to use OpenZFS on my backup server. Reading from https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openssh/openssh-portable/master/contrib/r… I can install it using two different methods: DKMS kABI-tracking kmod I would avoid using dkms because a compilation could fail and cannot mount my devices on the next reboot but I don't know anything about kABI method. OpenZFS by default uses DKMS method. What is the most secure method? Thank you in advance.

Odroid HC4 progress - need help

I have armbian booting on the HC4. I cannot get the AlmaLinux RPi image to boot. Basic questions of aarch64 install

I am downloading the various aarch64 8.5 images. Focusing on minimal and dvd. I will be putting it somehow on a usb stick and need to find out how the Odroid will recognize it My Odroid/HC4 is enroute; should be here in a day or two so what to do some planning. How does the iso image install figure out where to put the partitions? Until I learn how, I suspect I will be putting the /boot on the mSD card after the uboot. HardKernel (maker of Odroid) has a larger uboot that some devices. How do I insure that the partition does not step on it. Is RAID1 built in? The HC4 has 2 sata slots and I will be putting identical 2.5" HD in them. Would like to use RAID1. I would like to place the / partition on the HDs. That should be fairly straight-forward with extlinux.conf append like: append root=UUID=ad25a528-baf4-469c-bd12-5276e8f5f9ae What would this look like with RAID1? I am going to be rooting ( :) ) around the Odroid/HC4 wiki for how to boot an alternative OS iso and put down the uboot, but need to look at this from both sides. thanks

New to Almalinux - list of aarch64

It is time to upgrade systems here, and it seems that arm32 has been left in the scrap heap. Shame with all the Allwinner boards I have... Is there a list of tested aarch64 systems? I am particularly looking for ones with 4GB memory and sata support. I have never been a fan of Raspberry, and with the RPi4, you have to get at least a sata extension board. I do like it still works with 5v; 3a is no problem for me with my Anker power supply, but I suspect more will be needed once you add the sata expansion card and drive (thus whatever is in the list of other aarch64 systems should have power requirements). Anyway, as I go back before Centos1 (I believe it was called WhiteHat), I need to go with the flow. Hard to believe Centos has managed for so long. By Centos.

KVM virsh console to physical console?

I'm preparing to virtualize a Windows server onto a Linux system under virsh. Initial results are looking good, but an issue that's come up is the need to log into the Linux system prior to being able to access the Windows system for updates. Is there a way to "connect" the virsh console directly to a physical Linux terminal? EG: Ctl+Alt+F8 to access the Windows virsh console for Windows Server Thank you Ben Smith

Elevate CentOS 7->A8 upgrades postgresql from 9.2 to 10.0

Hi, I’ve been evaluating elevate and would like to point out a problem with the current configuration. Right now, if I have postgres and postgres-server (both at 9.2) installed, when I use elevate, I end up with 10.17. The problem is that some applications still depend on 9 in order to function. AlmaLinux 8 provides postgresql 9.6 and IMO this would be a better choice when upgrading people between 7 and 8. To get to this in 8, you have to first run: dnf enable module postgresql:9.6 then dnf install postgresql-server If a user wants to move to 10 from 9.6, they can. They cannot move from 10 to 9.6 though. Thanks, Todd Rinaldo

/etc/pam.d/system-auth created by authselect, but authselect not configured

Hello all: I am trying to understand PAM, I have not used it before. When I open /etc/pam.d/system-auth, it has these lines: # This file is auto-generated. # User changes will be destroyed the next time authselect is run. But, when I run: authselect check It tells me: System was not configured with authselect. This seems incongruent. Any insights? Error: ws-discovery is an invalid service

Hello all: I am seeing packets to port 3702 in my firewall log so I wanted to add a rule to drop them silently. I tried this command: firewall-cmd --permanent --add-rich-rule='rule service name=ws-discovery drop' Which give me this message: success But, when I do systemctl restart firewalld I see this entry in the log: ERROR: INVALID_SERVICE: ws-discovery That is strange. Qemu - enabling "bridge mode" for primary physical interface for VMs

I have a physical host with a single physical network adapter. I want to host several VMs on host. (guest1 - guest4) The guest systems are accessible via 192.168.122.* as is the default with qemu/virsh. There are 4 IP addresses being routed to the primary interface on host. I can set up an alias for the NIC and "see" these ip addresses. I understand that it's possible to allow the 4 VM guest systems to each have a "direct" fixed IP address and access the addresses \via the host network adapter, while the host retains its fixed IP. I've been googling like crazy and there is a lot of stale and conflicting information. Has anybody here done this successfully? Host and all guests are running Alma 8. Thanks. Ben S
